Happy New Year – Golden 2011
Posted by fc in Dec 31, 2010, under Uncategorized
I have blogged my view on gold a few times, but I still cannot stop repeating to post the following chart (especially when your call is “correct”). At this juncture, we do not have Dubai crisis, intensifying PIGS sovereign issue and QE3. However, gold price has risen almost 30% in US dollar terms in 2010. I was not brave enough to put my money to Sri Lanka or Thailand equities, which rose more than 55% in USD terms. Luckily, I have some gold exposure, but obviously not enough (when they appreciated).
Wish you a Golden Happy New Year in 2011

Creditability and Lord’s Prayer
Posted by fc in Nov 05, 2010, under Uncategorized
What are the similarities between Dubai crisis, PIGS sovereign issue and QE2? They are spike in gold price, loss of creditability and confidence of the underlying instruments. It is a mystery to me how the US can honorably print money on one hand and assiduously urge China to appreciate the Renminbi against the US dollars. Export inflation to other countries is a sort of economic invasion inviting the emerging markets to take the same kind of drugs that US is taking. Disciplined investors and countries should stay away from this temptation. I just pay 10% more for my bread in November. Let’s pray…
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen
Observation from Shanghai

I observed a couple of things from my trip to Shanghai Rolex Masters Tennis. First, sportsmanship is well respected by professional players. I sat next to the trainers of Djokovic. They clapped the opponent of Novak who ran very hard and played a beautiful backhand to win a point. How often this happens in China?
Second, Chinese has an unique approach to tennis. Some people walked around when the tennis match was going on in Center Court. These include the audiences, photographers and amazingly the Chinese match officials. During the match, flash photograph, using mobile phone and late to take sitting by audience happened so often that I almost wondered if this was a new norm in China. How often this happens outside China?
Third, it is never too old to have a hobby. Woman is a minority among sports photographers. So an old Chinese lady caught my eyes when she walked around and carried a heavy lens with a monopod in the stadium. I greeted her and said 您好利害,很重吗? She smiled and replied 沒甚麽. Judging from her age, I guess photography is not her job but a hobby. Well, there was another foreign lady photographer in the stadium. Both gave the venue a brief of fresh air…

Dark day for Hong Kong
Posted by fc in Aug 24, 2010, under 1
On August 23, 2010, nine Hong Kong tourists were killed in a hostage-taking bus in Manila, Philippines. It is a dark day and sad event. Prayer goes to the dead, injuries and their families and friends. Rest in peace.
